India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that the record-breaking Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams was a "role model" for Indian children and a "Source of Inspiration" for the country's woman. Speaking to the astronaut over the phone, Singh told Williams that, "India feels proud of her unique achievement, even though she was a US citizen, and her contribution to the human quest for a better understanding of the Universe."
The 42-year-old Williams, born to an Indian immigrant and an American mother, broke the world record for the longest stay by a woman in space, carrying out research at the International Space Station for 195 days.
