When we talk about Women freedom fighters we are extremely proud to say that they are 'Indian'. The sacrifice made by the Indian women will stand first as they took the step forward in fighting for our Independence. These Women came forward and took the struggle in their hands.
She later got married in the year , 1928 , when she married Asaf Ali, the leader of the Congress Party at Allahabad. There were oppositions against her marriage for he was a Muslim and she a Brahmo.Aruna comes from a family of different backgrounds, her father hailed from East Bengal and owned a restaurant while her mother was the daughter of a renowned Brahmo Leader who had written many beautiful Brahmo hymns. Her younger brother, was a film director and the other brother married Rabindranath Tagore's daughter Mira Devi. Her sister on the other hand Purnima Banerjee was a member of the Constituent Assembly Of India.
This brave heart , is remembered for hoisting the Congress Flag at the Gowalia maiden Tank in Mumbai during the Quit India Movement in the year 1942. The All India Congress committee passed the Quit India Resolution at the Mumbai Session and by this the government responded by arresting the major leaders and all the members of the Congress Working Committee. Her hoisting the flag marked the commencement of the movement. By this Aruna was called the , “ Grand Old Lady of the Independence movement.”
She became an active member of Congress Party after marriage and participated in public processions during the Salt Satyagraha. She was arrested on the charge that she was a vagrant and hence not released in 1931 under the Gandhi-Irwin Pact which stipulated release of all political prisoners. Other women co-prisoners refused to leave the premises unless she was also released and gave in only after Mahatma Gandhi intervened. A public agitation secured her release.
She lived with a divine legacy, was awarded the International Lenin Peace Prize in the year 1964.Later she was awarded India's Second Highest Civilian Honor, Padma Vibhushan in 1992. The Bharat Ratna . Highest civilian award was given to her too in 1997.
Aruna Asaf Ali was well known for her Spartan lifestyle – she used public transport where ever she had traveled. Our Brave freedom Fighter passed away at the age of 87 years.
